Narrative poetry
Narrative poetry is a genre of poetry that tells a story. Broadly it subsumes epic poetry, but the term “narrative poetry” is often reserved for smaller works, generally with more appeal to human interest. Narrative poetry may be the oldest type of poetry.
Example :
(Anne Carson,
"Autobiography of Red")
“…Small, red, and
upright he waited,
gripping his new bookbag tight
in one hand and touching a lucky penny inside his coat
pocket with the other,
while the first snows of winter
floated down on his eyelashes and covered the branches
around him and silenced
all trace of the world.”
Epic poetry
Epic poetry is a genre of poetry, and a
major form of narrative literature. This genre is often defined as lengthy
poems concerning events of a heroic or important nature to the culture of the
time. It recounts, in a continuous narrative, the life and works of a heroic or
mythological person or group of persons.
Example :
Of all creatures that breathe and move upon the earth,
nothing is bred that is weaker than man.
(Homer, The Odyssey)
3. Dramatic poetry
Dramatic poetry is drama written in verse
to be spoken or sung, and appears in varying, sometimes related forms in many
cultures.
Example :
"The Dream Called Life" by Pedro Calderon de
la Barca
DREAM it was in which I found
myself.
And you that hail me now, then
hailed me king,
In a brave palace that was all my
own,
Within, and all without it, mine;
until,
Drunk with excess of majesty and
pride,
Methought I towered so big and
swelled so wide
That of myself I burst the
glittering bubble
Which my ambition had about me blown
And all again was darkness. Such
a dream
As this, in which I may be
walking now,
Dispensing solemn justice to you
shadows,
Who make believe to listen; but
anon
Kings, princes, captains,
warriors, plume and steel,
Ay, even with all your airy
theater,
May flit into the air you seem to
rend
Lyric poetry
Lyric poetry is a genre that, unlike epic and dramatic poetry, does not attempt to tell a story but instead is of a more personal nature. Poems in this genre tend to be shorter, melodic, and contemplative. Rather than depicting characters and actions, it portrays the poet’s own feelings, states of mind, and perceptions. Refer to my analysis of lyric poetry and its association with lyrics.
Example :
By none other than William Shakespeare. Here's his famous "Sonnet
Number 18:"
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed,
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course untrimmed.
There are some of Indonesian Poetry, such as :
Elegy
An elegy is a mournful, melancholy or
plaintive poem, especially a lament for the dead or a funeral song. The term
“elegy,” which originally denoted a type of poetic metre (elegiac metre),
commonly describes a poem of mourning.
Example :
Sia-Sia²
Karya: Chairil Anwar
Penghabisan kali itu kau datang
Membawa kembang berkarang
Mawar merah dan melati putih
Darah dan suci
Kau tebarkan depanku
Serta pandang yang memastikan: untukmu
Lalu kita sama termangu
Saling bertanya: apakah ini?
Cinta? Kita berdua tak mengerti
Sehari kita bersama. Tak gampir-menghampiri.
Ah! Hatiku yang tak mau memberi
Mampus kau dikoyak-koyak sepi.
Februari, 1943
Balada Orang-orang Tercinta
Karya: W.S. Rendra
Kita bergantian menghirup asam
Batuk dan lemas terceruk
Marah dan terbaret-baret
Cinta membuat kita bertahan
dengan secuil redup harapan
Kita berjalan terseok-seok
Mengira lelah akan hilang
di ujung terowongan yang terang
Namun cinta tidak membawa kita
memahami satu sama lain
Kadang kita merasa beruntung
Namun harusnya kita merenung
Akankah kita sampai di altar
Dengan berlari terpatah-patah
Mengapa cinta tak mengajari kita
Untuk berhenti berpura-pura?
Kita meleleh dan tergerus
Serut-serut sinar matahari
Sementara kita sudah lupa
rasanya mengalir bersama kehidupan
Melupakan hal-hal kecil
yang dulu termaafkan
Mengapa kita saling menyembunyikan
Mengapa marah dengan keadaan?
Mengapa lari ketika sesuatu
membengkak jika dibiarkan?
Kita percaya pada cinta
Yang borok dan tak sederhana
Kita tertangkap jatuh terperangkap
Dalam balada orang-orang tercinta
Dalam Doaku
Pada suatu hari
nanti
Di hamparan sajadah
Ragaku terkapar jiwaku melayang
Suaraku kian senyap menggema
Dzikir yang bersitahankan
Rasa gejolak yang entah batasnya
Namun aku terfakur dalam kemasyukan
Cinta yang tak’kan pernah selesai
Dengan kalimat AMIN
Puisi Fia Afridah "Bangsaku"
Aku kecil namun aku tak bisa dianggap kecil
Aku lemah namun aku tak bisa menyerah
Selama nyawa masih melekat di dalam raga
Dan suara detak jantung msih terasa
Ku akan terus berlari mengejar sang surya
Walaupun aku miskin bukan berarti aku tak punya
Dengan semangat empat lima
Dengan suara lantang mendekaKu terus kobarkan sang saka
Demi bangsaku tercinta
